The British Boarding School
British schools and colleges offer an education, which is highly valued throughout the world. In addition to a first class academic tuition in a wide-ranging curriculum, the boarding schools offer a variety of sporting, musical and artistic opportunities and such diverse extra-curricular activities as drama and dance, chess and charity work, stamp collecting and skiing. An overseas child will have the chance to learn about Britain’s culture and heritage on visits to places of interest. Supervision and welfare are of the greatest importance and you can be assured that your child will be well cared for.
There is a great range of schools, both single sex and co-educational, welcoming boarders from the age of 8-18, each with its own strengths and style. It is vitally important that your child attends a school that is suitable for his or her abilities, character, interests and background.
In order to ensure a place at the school of your choice you should apply to your chosen school as early as possible preferably in the March or April of the previous academic year to when you wish your child to attend. Some of the more prestigious schools require applications at least one academic year in advance.
If you wish RUYANG’s Educational Consultancy Department to handle your application to a Boarding school within the United Kingdom on your behalf you should, first fill out the RUYANG Educational Consultancy application form and supplementary information forms provided in order that we have:
- A list of the current academic grades at the child’s existing school.
- A brief report from the existing school of the child’s general ability and behaviour.
- A brief description of the child’s interests, hobbies and career ambitions.
- The child’s medical background.
On application you will receive further details of the British school system and be helped to identify the location and type of school you require. A profile of your son or daughter compiled by you, the child’s school and from his or her own words, will assist us to make a short list of suitable schools. Once you have made your choice we shall proceed with the application on your behalf, and assist with exams or visits and provide all the necessary back up.
All forms must be sent, together with a copy of the child’s latest school report (with English translation), the RUYANG registration fee is 100% free. (Please note this does not include the school’s registration fee thus this is paid by the overseas parent, directly to our office in England or to the local RUYANG representative in your country). In 99.9% of Cases registration fees are not refundable by schools as these fees are used to cover administration costs involved in processing each application.
We can and endeavour to place children in the school we believe is best suited to your Childs current educational ability and with scope to grow and progress. Unlike certain companies who are primarily concerned by working relationships with schools who pay them commission. We offer 100% un-biases services where the student’s educational progress, academic success, and wealth fare are our primary concern.
RUYANG’s Educational Consultancy Department will prepare all necessary paperwork to apply to 6 schools if needed on the parents’ behalf and pass on to the school all information supplied by the parents. We will inform you of the school’s decision regarding your child’s application in most cases no later than 72 hours after we receive your application form and schools registration fee.
The decision of most of the schools will depend on the availability of places and on the information supplied by RUYANG’s Educational Consultancy Department. Hence the importance of the overseas parents sending as much information as possible. However a few schools require applicants to pass an entry test. In such cases RUYANG’s Educational Consultancy Department will send the test directly to you or to the local RUYANG International Guardian Service & Education Consultancy Ltd. representative in your country and the timing of the school’s decision will then depend on:
- The speed of the mail between your country and the UK/Ireland.
- The time within which your child will be able to complete the test.
- The time required by the school to assess the test.
If a child is already studying in the UK/Ireland and applying for a place some schools will offer a place dependent on the results of the child’s secondary education examinations and receiving a letter from the current headmaster of the school the student is currently attending. The school may also request to meet the student in person in an interview format. If the application is successful the head of the school determines the commencement date.
Some schools will accept students in the final year of studying GCSE. In such cases the school will only take the final decision regarding the child’s acceptance at the end of August, once the results of the secondary education examinations have been published. However the preliminary application for such places must still be made as early as possible.
Once, the school has accepted a child to attend their school. The school will send to RUYANG International Guardian Service & Education Consultancy Ltd. The school’s acceptance form (including if any conditions of acceptance), The contract between the school and the parent if the school uses one (Please note not all schools have this) and an official letter of invitation to the UK/Ireland from the school (this is important and is used to obtain a VISA for study). Once RUYANG’s Educational Consultancy Department has received all the appropriate information from the school it will then forward to the parents the paper work and instructions to complete the process including RUYANG International Guardian Service & Education Consultancy Ltd. introduction to the UK starter pack for students coming to the UK.
The next step is to confirm the acceptance of any place offered, parents must sign the school’s acceptance form, The schools contract and all additional paper work sent. All the documents will be sent in with a self-addressed return Envelope it is important that this is returned to RUYANG’s Educational Consultancy Department within 7 days of receipt. Once the acceptance documents have been signed parents become fully liable for all obligations laid out in the above documents, especially with regard to any cancellation charges.
Along with the school’s acceptance form and school contract RUYANG International Guardian Service & Education Consultancy Ltd. will issue an invoice for the school fees and all necessary extras. To ensure that parents comply with school’s cancellation rules, the UK schools require a deposit equal to one term’s fees such deposit is automatically included in the invoice. The deposit is refundable at the end of the child’s studies at school, if not used to cover cancellation fees. Irish schools demand the year’s fees paid in advance.
In addition to all school fees all Boarding schools in the United Kingdom charge a further deposit to cover current expenses incurred by the child during his/her stay at school. This deposit is also refundable at the end of the child’s study at school provided that all expenses incurred by the child have been paid to the school in full.
Parents must make payment off all invoices within 7 days of receipt and in any case not later than 14 days as administration and accounting fees will be added at 4% interest compounded per month or part there of.
All payments must be made in any hard currency, cheque or by bank transfer to: “RUYANG International Guardian Service & Education Consultancy Ltd.”
Each subsequent term fees must be paid in advance by the parents in accordance with the invoice issued by RUYANG International Guardian Service & Education Consultancy Ltd. not later than 14 days before the start of term. The schools have the right to vary their annual fees. In such cases schools will give one full term’s notice in writing of any variations.
No cancellation fees are payable except for the school Registration Fee if:
Parents cancel before signing the school acceptance form and contract
The child is refused a VISA to enter the UK
The child is unable to start his/her studies due to a further interview regarding the VISA application required at the British/Irish Embassy after the start of the school term
These are general rules that apply to most United Kingdom Private Sector boarding schools:
- If parents cancel after the school acceptance form and contracts have been signed but before the start of the child’s studies, they must, depending on the school’s cancellation policy, pay either one term’s fees or deposit specified by the school. If parents cancel during the first term of study, and give notice before Half-term, only the first term’s fees are payable.
- If parents cancel during the first term of study and give notice after half-term, the school will keep the deposit equal to one term’s fees or retain one term’s fees if the payment is done for the whole year in advance.
- From the second term onwards, parents must give one full term’s notice of cancellation. Otherwise the school will keep the deposit equal to one term’s fees.
- If a child is expelled after the start of a school term there will be no refund of fees already paid for that term. However any deposits or advanced payments held by the school will be refunded less any expenses incurred at the school by the child.
- If a child becomes seriously ill after the start of a school term and has to abandon his/her studies, there will be no refund of fees already paid for that term. However any deposits advanced payments held by the school will be refunded less any expenses incurred at the school by the child.
- If a child is absent from school for any reason not covered above, there will be no reduction in fees.
We strongly advice parents to take out insurance to any cancellation charges or loss of fees due to a child’s expulsion or prolonged illness.
If parents cancel before the child begins his/her studies and there is a refund due from the school, this will be paid through RUYANG’s Educational Consultancy Department not later than 14 days after we have received written notification of the cancellation.
If parents cancel after the child has begun his/her studies, any refund due from the school will be paid through RUYANG’s Educational Consultancy Department not later than 14 days after the end of the child’s final term at the school.
RUYANG’s Educational Consultancy Department shall at all times assist the overseas parents in receiving any refund due from the school and forwarding such a refund to the parents. However, “RUYANG International Guardian Service and Educational Consultancy Ltd.” bears no responsibility for the school’s decision regarding any refund due.
In general, RUYANG International Guardian Service and Educational Consultancy will assume the role of ‘agent’ for the student during their time in the UK, performing appropriate safe-guarding duties, oversight and serving as liaison between the parents and the school. If we are also serving as Guardian, we will also perform the duties that would normally be performed by a responsible, conscientious parent, such as attending Parents’ evenings, providing accommodation during breaks, holidays and ‘exeats’, and responding to emergencies (see the Guardian Services section). In addition, Ruyang will keep the student’s parents informed of their child’s progress, and notify them of any incidents or arwas of concern.
However, RUYANG International Guardian Service and Educational Consultancy and its overseas representatives cannot be held responsible in the event of:
Serious illness of a child
The School under the supervision of the resident Nurse or Matron deals with all health matters concerning any student. Any more serious complaints are referred to a General Practitioner and any necessary treatment given under the British National Health Service. In Ireland such treatment is covered by the medical insurance, which is obligatory. It is, however, the parents’ responsibility to ensure that their child is in a fit medical state to study abroad, and to give full and accurate information as required by RUYANG International Guardian Service and Educational Consultancy Ltd. regarding the child’s medical background.
RUYANG International Guardian Service and Educational Consultancy Ltd. does not accept any liability for any illness contracted whilst a child is studying in the United Kingdom.
RUYANG International Guardian Service and Educational Consultancy Ltd. recommend that parents take out adequate insurance against Personal Accident. Further private health insurance can also be taken out – RUYANG International Guardian Service and Educational Consultancy Ltd. will be happy to supply information about companies offering comprehensive cover.
Loss or damage of property
It is the parent’s responsibility to provide adequate insurance cover for their child’s belongings whilst they are in the UK/Ireland. Most schools offer a Personal Effects scheme and RUYANG International Guardian Service and Educational Consultancy Ltd. advises that parents take out adequate insurance. If the school does not offer this type of insurance, RUYANG International Guardian Service and Educational Consultancy Ltd. will be pleased to provide information about suitable insurance companies and arrange cover according to the parents’ instructions and on their behalf.
RUYANG International Guardian Service and Educational Consultancy Ltd. in no way assumes responsibility for the performance or non-performance of any school or college of its obligations to its students, neither is RUYANG International Guardian Service and Educational Consultancy Ltd. responsible for any financial or other losses incurred in the case of schools or colleges closing due to bankruptcy or for any other reason. It is not possible to take out insurance to protect against such events (which are extremely rare), so parents should think carefully before paying more than one term’s fees in advance to any school or college.
It is the parents’ responsibility to pay to RUYANG International Guardian Service and Educational Consultancy Ltd. in addition to all other charges for the first term in the UK, a deposit of one term’s school fees. This is a requirement by the school in order to ensure that, should parents fail to give one term’s notice of withdrawing their child, one term’s fees will be paid to the school in lieu of notice. Some schools require the deposit to be paid to them along with the first term’s fees; otherwise RUYANG International Guardian Service and Educational Consultancy Ltd. will hold this deposit. The deposit can normally be used as part or full payment of school fees for the final term of the child’s studies unless the school states otherwise. In this case, the deposit will be refunded to the parents when the child leaves the school, less any charges still outstanding to the school at that time.
If RUYANG International Guardian Service and Educational Consultancy Ltd. holds the term’s deposit, the money will be refunded to the parents in the case of schools or colleges closing due to bankruptcy or for any other reason. However if the term’s deposit is paid to the school, under the school’s terms and conditions, RUYANG International Guardian Service and Educational Consultancy Ltd. is not responsible for the loss of this deposit in the case of schools or colleges closing due to bankruptcy or for any other reason.
